Danger of smoking
Most of smokers and others know that smoking cause lung cancer
but not many people will know the other negative effects
Beside lung cancer, smoking is also related to the other disease
that caused by smoking. Alzheimer's disease as smoking speeds
up mental decline, Lupus as smoking raises risk of autoimmune
disease, SIDS (Maternal Smoking Doubles Risk), Colic as smoking
makes babies irritable, an increased risk of impotence, blindness
as smoking raises risk of age-related macular degeneration, Rheumatoid
Arthritis (Genetically vulnerable smokers increase their risk
even more, Snoring (Even living with a smoker also raises risk),
Acid Reflux (Heavy smoking linked to heartburn), and Breast Cancer.
The above smoking effects are not only happening to smokers as
smokers are not the only ones being harmed by their habit. Secondhand
smoke kills, too
Cause of Death in US, year 2000
According to the table above, annual cause of death in the United
State shown that effect from smoking tobacco is number one cause
of death with 435,000 people are deaths because of these smoking
effects. Or we can say that 18.1% of total deaths in a year are
from smoking tobacco cigarette. Moreover, the other cause of death
such as Toxic agents is also part of smoking effects.
In Addition, beside the fact about smoking that cause deaths,
smoking effects from tobacco is also able to be related death.
Due to the table above, including 53,000 non-smokers of Toxic
agents such as environment pollution, water contamination and
Sexually-transmitted disease such as AIDS/HIV, the number of people
who died from tobacco-related diseases is 5 times higher than
people who died from Alcohol-related diseases, 17 times higher
than motor vehicle accident, and 21 times higher than Homicide
and STDs. In terms of life loss in a year, the damage from tobacco
can be compared to having hurricane Katrina struck again once
every 2 days.
